Ethical Considerations in Using ChatGPT

We continue with our discussion on ChatGPT and other AI

In the most recent podcast episode over on empowerED Podcast, I sat with Yuekun Li, the Global Business Lead of ClassIn, and discussed the world of AI and its impact on society. In the episode, we explored the ethical considerations surrounding the use of AI, including issues of bias, privacy, and accountability, and discuss ways to ensure that AI is used in a responsible and ethical manner.

Some of these have been discussed in the podcast but here are some ethical considerations that teachers should keep in mind when using ChatGPT:

  1. Privacy: When using ChatGPT, teachers should ensure that student privacy is protected. Teachers should not ask students to provide any personal information such as full names, addresses, or phone numbers. Also, teachers should be mindful of the fact that ChatGPT is not a person, so it is not bound by the same privacy laws as human teachers.
  2. Accuracy and Bias: Teachers should ensure that the information provided by ChatGPT is accurate and unbiased. AI language models can sometimes produce biased or incorrect information due to their training data, so it’s important for teachers to fact-check information provided by ChatGPT.
  3. Intellectual property: Teachers should make sure that they are using ChatGPT in a way that does not infringe on any intellectual property rights. This includes respecting copyrights, trademarks, and other forms of intellectual property.
  4. User safety: Teachers should ensure that students are safe when using ChatGPT. This includes monitoring conversations to prevent cyberbullying or other harmful behavior and ensuring that students do not share personal information with ChatGPT.
  5. Transparency: Teachers should be transparent with students about how they are using ChatGPT and what data is being collected. This can help students feel more comfortable and secure when using the technology.
  6. Equity: Teachers should be mindful of how the use of ChatGPT may impact equity in the classroom. Some students may have less access to technology or may not be comfortable using AI, so it’s important to ensure that all students have equal opportunities to learn and succeed.
